able to create a low cost, flexible, and easy solution to resale shelving. On site observations led us to the reuse of the existing pallet structure. We found that by attaching two together to create an A-frame, we were afforded various levels of display as well as the ability to keep the structure simple, modular, and stack-able. The modularity of this shelf structure was essential, as the farm changes constantly through out the winter and summer harvesting seasons. This design afforded more resale space within the currently existing resale footprint at GreensGrow. Urban farms usually have a very limited budget, are supported by volunteer staff, and are at times dependent upon selling plants to subsidize the costs of growing vegetables in the city. We believe we provided a system that addresses the needs we found. We created two key means of shelving: a very low cost, simple, and universal bracket made by a modified 2x4 and a slightly more expensive but more permanent folding shelf. We worked closely with Mitchel and Marsha during the design process to properly evaluate their needs. Our first steps were to interview and observe. A key problem area we discovered was difficulty of operating the chair while simultaneously holding something in the extra hand. Users in electric wheelchairs, when in motion, must have one hand at all times controlling the chair leaving only their second hand for holding/gripping of objects, groceries, beverages, etc. We addressed this usability problem by developing a flexible and movable third limb and hand that could be universally attached to multiple areas on a chair. The "limb" also needed to be easily moved out of the way when not in use. In considering our partners other physical conditions, such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis, we opted to use industrial coolant line which allows for pivot points to exist anywhere along the "limb". We found that this flexibility could be adapted easily. In total, I built 25 birdhouses. The goal of this was to make for the sake of making and to give the birds a beautiful place to live. After a few weeks of slowly installing them next to a bike line, I began to illicit a response. This guerrilla street concept led to opportunity. I was approached by the Schuykill Center for Wildlife Education and asked to design and build an educational installation. I was one of three contributing artist for an exhibit at the center from Dec '11 - Feb '12. The five houses built for the show were each equipped with a speaker and audio recording of a different bird species. We were addressing the topic of the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as swine flu. Our brief was to design a wearable that addressed the word "quarantine". By playing off of the existing examples of other widely popular wearable, such as the snuggie, we envisioned a full body garment made of bacteria resistant materials with a built in protective mesh to allow for breathing. Considering how successful the snuggie had been, we hoped that this consumer friendly quarantine suite would - in the event of a wide scale N1H1 virus outbreak - be acceptable and of interest to the everyday consumer.
